about

Read the Origivation review! (4 stars)

Playful and original, Island of Dreams is the brainchild of Josh McIlvain, renowned New York/Philly singer/songwriter. The songs are sophisticated, dramatic and smart, with lyrics to match—moods better suited to an Updike novel than a pop record. And while McIlvain's voice is eerily reminiscent of Steve Perry's (anybody remember Cherry Poppin' Daddies?) and by no means gorgeous, he genuinely sings the crap out of the tunes, and the almost mocking quality of his voice will strike a strong chord with the embittered wise man in every listener.

Track Name: Bridge To Indiana
I walk the bridge to Indiana
I walk the bridge to Indiana
I walk the bridge to Indiana
Indiana my new home

I left my stuff in old Kentucky
I left it for the maids
Yeah, I left it all in old Kentucky
Now I’m going my own way

I walk the bridge to Indiana
Indiana, my new home
Yeah, I’m settling in Indiana
On the banks of the Ohio

I had a wife in Old Kentucky
But that wife—she wasn’t mine
So I walk the bridge to Indiana
And I’m leaving that wife behind

Now I’m a machine operator
At the toothpaste factory
Now all my clothes smell like toothpaste
But my teeth are mighty clean

Yeah, I walk the bridge to Indiana
Where no one knows when I come from
And though I still look out on Old Kentucky
Indiana is my home

Track Name: Love Myself
You told me to love myself
So I learned to love myself
And now that I love myself
I love nobody else

I wake up in the morning
Thinking how wonderful I am
And I talk to myself all day
Because I have the best conversations

I’m very attentive
To all my varied needs
Who else to know better
Just how I am pleased

Yes, you told me to love myself
And now that I do
I can help but think my darling
How you should love me too

I’ve learned to appreciate
All my good qualities
And as for the bad ones
I now can overlook these

Now I don’t get upset
Over things I do wrong
I figure tough shit
If you don’t like what I’ve done

Love myself . . .
Love myself . . .

You told me to love myself
And now that I’ve found success
I’m so totally in love with myself
How do you find loneliness?

Track Name: The Girl Thinks She's In Paris
The girl thinks she's in Paris
Because she's at a sidewalk cafe
Still I won't be the one to tell her
Paris is several thousand miles away

For while many dream of going
She dreams she's already there
Check out the Galloise she's smoking
And her contended air

The girl thinks she's in Paris
I won't wake her up to reality
For if she thinks she's in Paris
Maybe she's in a better place than me

She doesn't notice the teenage couple
Making fun of her beret
She's too busy writing in her journal
She's got a lot to say

I wonder where she likes to visit
The Louvre or the Centre Pompidou
Paris parks are exquisite
Has she been to the Latin quarter the past hour or two?

So if the girl thinks she's in Paris
She must see beauty all around
For Paris is a beautiful city
And I'd trade Paris for this town

Track Name: The Desert Song
The desert is beautiful at night
The cool wind blows across the sand
And the stars shine plentiful and bright
The desert is beautiful at night

When the moon shines full
It washes the desert in white
You can walk about
Or stop and listen to the quiet

There are peaceful places in the world
That you can only come upon alone
Where it feels so good to be alive
The desert is beautiful at night

The desert is beautiful at night
Breathe deep and close your eyes
You will think the world must be all right
With the desert so beautiful . . .

Track Name: Life of Al
Al got his girl pregnant
He wasn’t crazy about the thought
By the time she bore a daughter
Good old Al had taken off

He traveled far and wide
But everywhere he went he had a battle inside
That kept him moving on
Good old Al never stayed for long

That’s the life of Al
That’s the life of Al…
.
A story of factories and odd jobs
Of drunken times in parking lots
Of waitresses and restaurants
Of renting homes in trailer parks

But everywhere you go people remember Al
He was a friend a real pal
Easy with a smile quick with a joke
Fondly spoken of by folks

That’s the life of Al
That’s the life of Al….

One day there was a knock on his front door
A young lady who said she was his daughter
He looked at her as if looking into outer space
Then he slammed that door right in her face

That’s the life of Al
That’s the life of Al….

Track Name: Vacation
Your letter came
You wrote that you’ve loved me for a long time
But kept it hidden away
Now you’re going to lay it on the line

But you live in California
And I’m across the nation
Did you forget that when you last saw me
I was on vacation?

I was on vacation…

I guess friends shouldn’t fool around
But we were stuck in your bedroom
And what’s wrong with two friends having fun
When you’re on vacation?

And here your letter says
That we’re the perfect match
But I have to disagree with that you see
And say we were more of a patch

Because I was on vacation…

Perhaps I should have been more sensitive
More tuned in to the signs
But when you went to seduce me
Who was I to read between the lines?

So I write you back
And I thank you as a host
But as for the rest it’s not really like that
Because I only vacation on your coast

I was on vacation…
Track Name: The Sarge Drinks Manhattans
They call him the Sarge
Because he’s always in uniform
Cuts his hair like Lee Marvin did
And drinks like him too

When that first Manhattan comes to Sarge
His eyes light up like it’s Christmas
His second comes before the first is done
He likes his cherries calls them girls

Three Manhattans before noon
Then he has a chicken sandwich
And a fresh brewed ice tea
Before having one more Manhattan

Yeah, the Sarge drinks Manhattans
He has three before noon
But only one after lunch
Before he drives his station wagon

Sarge smiles when he gets an extra cherry
He tells the waitress of troop maneuvers
And of all the secret document letters
He mails at the post office

The Sarge drinks Manhattans everyday
Always at the same table
And though the Sarge is not a young man
He smiles like a little boy

Yeah, the Sarge drinks Manhattans
He has three before noon
But only one after lunch
Before he drives his station wagon

Track Name: If I Could Act
If I could act
I’d act all the time
And be a kid
Forever . . .

Every word I said
Would mean something to someone
And every love I had
The greatest treasure

If I could only act
Then all my feelings
Could come and go
As I wanted them to

If I did something wrong
It would be due to confusion
I’d blame it all on the attention
To much for one man

If I could act
I wouldn’t forget where I came from
I’d still love you all
Please believe me

But there’s a place
Where I entertain my co-stars
And it’s beautiful
Beautiful like heaven

Track Name: Lizard Killer
Killed a lizard just last week
How could I feed it when it didn’t speak?
How was I supposed to know what it ate?
I served French friend potatoes on a plate

If you think I’m stupid
You may be right
But if you say so
Expect a fight

Lizard’s aren’t the easiest of pets
They don’t do nothing and are easy to forget
I was sure they moved more
Do you think inertia killed the dinosaurs?

Chorus: I’m dumb as hell
This may be true
But the funny thing is
I’m smarter than you!

Someone said goldfish were easy to keep
They swim around, theyand don’t need to sleep
So I brought some home from the county fair
No one told me they couldn’t breathe in air

Now what kind of animal lives like that?
We all need air and that’s a fact
You don’t go underwater to eat a fish
You have it on the table in a dish

Chorus

Had a boa constrictor for a while
Till they killed it when it killed a child
Now my neighbors are all upset
‘Cause it was their boy I left with my pet

I guess I’m lucky it didn’t kill me
Because then where would I be
They took away my boa and it makes me side
If I had only buried that kid deep in the back

Track Name: Happy/Blue
I never knew you happy
I never knew you blue
I never knew you happy or blue
I guess I never really knew you
I guess I never really knew you

I knew how you liked your coffee
I knew how to make your tea
I knew how to make your coffee and tea
But I couldn’t make you happy
But I couldn’t make you happy

The thing that scares me the most
Is how we couldn’t have done much better
So why is it I can count in years
The time we spent together?

Did you save those pictures
That your brother-in-law took
And are we together still
Living in your scrapbook?

But if our love was so compromised
And based on false hopes
Why is it I still talk to you
When I’m alone?

I never knew you happy
I never know you blue
I never knew you happy or blue
I guess I never really knew you
